Understanding Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are common and, in most cases, not harmful. While they can be treated, they cannot be permanently cured. Treatment is usually sought for one or more of the following reasons:
-
Relief from aches and pains
-
Prevention or treatment of ulcers
-
Cosmetic improvement by removing red spider veins, large and bulging veins
Are You a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a quick and simple procedure, but it’s not suitable for everyone. We will help determine if it’s right for you. Generally, you may not be a good candidate if:
-
You are unable to walk for 30 minutes a day
-
You are significantly overweight
-
You have multiple or complex medical conditions
In such cases, we may advise against injection therapy for cosmetic reasons.
About Micro-Sclerotherapy
Micro-sclerotherapy is commonly used to treat leg spider veins. The procedure is usually straightforward. However:
-
Numerous tiny veins can be more delicate and complex to inject
-
Larger veins are often easier to treat and may respond better
Best Time for Treatment
We recommend scheduling your varicose vein treatments during cooler months. This allows you to comfortably wear compression stockings and gives time for bruising to fade—which may take several months.
Important Considerations
-
No long-haul flights for 2–6 weeks after treatment, unless you take blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, Pradaxa, Clexane) to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
-
Don’t wait until summer—bruising may linger for months, and you may need to cover your legs
-
If you have darker skin, take iron supplements, or have large superficial veins, bruising may last longer
